District capital:
Vilafranca del Penedès |
| L’Alt Penedès is in the depression before the Catalan coast, forming a great plain making it ideal for crops. Although its two rivers, the Anoia and the Foix, are not very large, most of the land is used for crops, largely vineyards. There are also cereal crops and fruit trees, but to a much lesser extent. It has a mild climate, with the Sierra Prelitoral in the north protecting the district from the effects of a harder continental climate, and also due to the influence of the Mediterranean, which reaches the district through the limited height of the mountains. The populaiton, largely farmers, are spread out between several boroughs, although there are two important towns: Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and the district capital, Vilafranca del Penedès.
