District capital:
El Pont de Suert |
| L’Alta Ribagorça, a newly created district (1988) with its capital in Pont de Suert, consists of a series of boroughs that were segregated from Pallars Jussà. It is a typical mountain district. The land is craggy and abrupt, with peaks of over 9,000 feet, and its climate consists of cold winters and cool, wet summers. Local vegetation has changed over time, affected by human activities. On the lower slopes, young oaks have been replaced by wild pines, box trees, thicket and heaths. Beech trees are common in shady areas and firs cover the higher slopes. Above 4,800 feet we find black pines, which give way higher up to alpine meadows. The district's economy was based on forestry, livestock breeding and farming until the hydroelectric industry settles hered in the second half of the 20th century, completely transforming local life and economy. Traditional activities were gradually abandoned and people started to leave the district. This process, however, has been halted somewhat by the development of tourism in the area.
