District capital:
Tortosa |
| El Baix Ebre is one of the two district at the end of the course of the Ebro. Organised around Tortosa, the district has four different types of landscape: the hills, the plain, the river bank and the delta, although most of the landscape centres around the Ebro river, which has played a vital role in the district's economic and demographic status. It has a coastal Mediterranean climate, with limited rainfall, with maximum quantities registered in the spring and autumn and the minimums in the summer. The local vegetation varies from one area to another. Oaks trees in the hills, holm oaks and thicket in the shadier areas, poplars, elms and willows on the river banks. However, farm land is now predominant, although crops have been abandoned in the plain and the hills, which are now given over to pines, thicket and bushes. Both wet and dry crops are farmed, including rice vegetables, fruit trees, olives, carob trees, almonds and cereals. Fishing activities are centred in L’Ampolla, l’Atmetlla de Mar and the delta area. The most important industries are food products (oil and vegetable preserves), animal feed, chemicals, furniture and building. Tourism is also becoming increasingly important.
