District capital:
Vic |
| La Osona occupies the westernmost part of the middle course of the Ter river, and it is centred in the town of Vic, the district capital. The plain surrounding the town, the Plana de Vic, is the heart of the La Osona district, surrounded by hills and mountainous massifs such as the Montseny, to the south, Les Guilleries, to the east and the Bellmunt and Cabrera hills to the north. It has a medium mountain Mediterranean climate with continental trends and plenty of rain throughout its eastern and northern sectors. Winters and cold and on the Plana de Vic temperature inversion phenomena are common and cause fogs that can last for days at a time. Summers are generally cool in the mountains and relatively warm on the plains. The local vegetation is highly varied. The Plana de Vic is dominated by oak trees, whereas the sunny lower slopes are covered with holm oaks, the medium mountain with oaks and cork oaks abound in the shadier mountain areas. Nowadays, the fertile lands of the Plana are largely covered by crops and woodland is limited to the mountain slopes, where there are also pastures and thicket. The district's economic activity is based on farming, livestock breeding and industry. Livestock breeding is vital for the district, especially pigs, folloed by cows. In fact, most of the crops are for livestock use, especially fodder and cereals. However, industry is the economic sector creating most employment, particularly textiles, woodwork, food products and tanners.
