| El Vallés Occidental occupies the Catalan pre-coastal depression, corresponding to the western half of the Vallés rift valley. This half is between the coastal and pre-coastal mountain range. Its river network, with limited flow and a Mediterranean regime, crosses the district from the north-west to the south-east: the Caldes and the Ripoll flow towards the Besòs, whereas the Rubí flows towards the Llobregat. The climate is Mediterranean, with mild temperatures and no real winter. The annual rainfall in the district varies greatly from one year to another and is also affected by the summer droughts typical of the Mediterranean, although the San Llorenç del Munt massif, and the entire northern sector in general, has more rainfall. Traditional farming and housing has made the district's vegetation quite scarce. Actually, all that is left is a few holm oak and oak woods with shrubs and thicket in marginal areas. Farming, important in the past, has progressively been given over to industry and housing. Dry crops are the most common, largely cereals, fodder, vines, potatoes, fruit, almonds, hazelnuts and olives. Industry in El Vallés Occidental, established mainly in Sabadell and Terrasa, with over a century's tradition, has been largely favoured by its proximity to Barcelona, and has progressively developed. The area now pioneers several sectors, especially wool, knitwear, cotton, synthetic fibres and textiles in general. This has not prevented other industries from developing, such as metal, steel, building materials, chemicals, food products, printing and woodwork, among others. Services, in spite of some failings, have also developed in recent years according to the high level of industrialisation, and the district has a complex communications network and important commercial activities. Finally, the local towns are important immigration centres, attracted by the opportunities derived from the growing industrialisation process.
